CERT September meeting – Communications

First, Hurricane Florence

After a quiet summer, the 2018 tropical storm system is heating up. Florence looks to be headed our way, which could mean high winds and lots of rain. Combined those spell power outages, transportation interruptions, and school closings. As a CERT you have started to prepare your families for bad weather. Here is a checklist you can share with others who are just now thinking about how to get ready:

Remember as a CERT, your first priority is your family, then your neighborhood.  Don’t become a victim needing rescue by first responders.

Please sign up for the Ready Chatham emergency alerting service at if you have not do so. That service will provide notifications specific to your area when emergencies arise. Follow any specific emergency directions from the Chatham Co emergency operations center if provided.

For those who attended the SKYWARN training, their website ( and their amateur radio repeater frequency (146.88) will be great sources of weather information.

September CERT class

At our September meeting we are presenting a class about Family and CERT emergency communications, with an introduction to amateur (‘ham’) radio. If you have never used a radio before, this is for you. If you are an expert, this is also for you, as we will discuss some ways of how we as CERT members will communicate together.

Please put September 26, 2018 at 6:30 PM (18:30) on your calendar for this class. We will meet at the Chatham County Emergency Operations Center, 297 West Street, Pittsboro. See you there, and bring a friend!
